KAVALAN Tasting Part 1

Kavalan Single Malt
Kavalan Concertmaster

Speaker: Mr Ian Chang, Master Blender and Global Brand Ambassador of Kavalan Malt Whisky

ok so here we go in the first part of the tasting of the Kavalan Malts, this is part 1.

Kavalan Single Malt

Kavalan Single malt is the flagship expression where they regard the unusual climate of Taiwan particularly well-suited to aging whisky and this is there representation of this.

Tasting…

Nose: A lot of grain in the form of sweet malt. Vanilla, Honey, coconut, fruits but not your normal run of the miil fruits, I get mango, banana and melons.

Palate: The whisky on the tongue bites at first with ginger and pepper. Do I like it, no! a rush of almonds, banana and sweetness I cannot put my finger on.

Finish: Vanillay oak.

Comments:
This Kavalan Single Malt came too in 2008 and is the distillery’s best seller. It is composed from first fill bourbon and sherry casks, but also several refill casks and even a wine cask. This one has a bit or 0.5% of E150a for the colour.

Kavalan Concertmaster

Kavalan Concertmaster whisky is there malt that is finished in Portuguese port casks. The flavours of Taiwanese spirit and Portuguese wine are said to make a "harmonic symphony."

Being the second whisky under the Kavalan label, from 2009, finished in Portugese port casks, Ruby, Tawny and Vintage Port. No caramel here. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Tasting…
Nose: Oh, my, this nose is even sweeter and more tropical than the Kavalan Single Malt. Not unexpectedly, I get mostly red fruit, like berries, strawberries and raspberries. Again, the banana is there, this time around sprinkled with brown sugar. Black grapes too. Mild tannins. Very nice.

Palate: Sticky sweet and fruity. Red fruit and Caramal, lots of Caramel.

Finish: Short finish, sweet fruit, not sure about this one.

Comments:
Not bad, but not my cup of tea, a little too sweet and winey.
