After a few days I put the Mortlach 1988
aside and decided to look at Glen Grant. I had picked up another bottle of the
10 year old recently and was dying to crack it open. So with a Typhoon on the
way what better time, I was surprised that the sky was so clear, especially
with a typhoon on the way, but as usual it’s the calm before the storm. I took
this picture on the balcony, as you can see I’m lucky I never took up
photography professionally, as I’m crap.
Ok so here we are with the Glen Grant, when
I had my first bottle and tasted the first glass my first impression was, this
is shit and they should send the lot to Chivas for blending, however after in
the glass for 10-15 minutes that’s where it begins to grab your attention, this
is not the best of 10 year olds I have tried but not the worst, its just a good
10 year old. I picked up the V decades, 16 year old and the 170th
Anniversary bottle so I will be interested to see what they are like.
Incidentally a lot of bottling are coming
from independent bottlers, look out for some of the bottling’s from Gordon & MacPhail, some of the ones I sipped were very good.
What…
Glen Grant 10 year old
Location…
SPEYSIDE
Where…
I’m sipping this one on the balcony in
Philippines, waitin for the Typhoon.
Why…
Cannot go out as its Typhoon signal number
4 here. TVs crap and no Internet connection as its down. So in other words I’m
bored as hell, so sharing a bottle with some friends it the best way to enjoy
it and pass the time.
Tasting…
Nose: Wood, nuts, lots of nuts, Vanilla, icing sugar, one of the guys got
peaches, definitely Vanilla.
Palate: Spice, black pepper, boiled candies.
Finish: sweet peppery after taste with a fondant linger
in the mouth.
Comments: Keep
it in the glass for 10 minutes then it’s a great drop, I can see why Jim Murray
rated it so high, as the bottle goes down and with the oxygen in the bottle it
just gets better.
I
should mention here I’m using a Macallan glass as my Glencairn glasses got
broken on the way over.
Get
it…
If you, friends or family are traveling ask
them to pick you up a bottle in duty free, it should be in most international
airports, failing that try the whisky exchange online, in Hong Kong the only
place is duty free.
